MADISON

My senior year was a whirlwind of newly discovered passions and realized dreams, thanks to Shana Bloom.

"At Mt. Hope High School, Shana and I worked together through various projects including our school’s journey with the XQ Institute which is an organization devoted to centering equity within our nation’s schools. Through this equity work, she encouraged me to explore this newly discovered passion of mine. She guided me through my options in applying for internships and helped me envision my dream career through casual conversation and real-world experience."

How I worked with Madison

Working with Maddy was an amazing experience. When I met her, she was a senior in high school. She was a talented speaker, writer and advocate for social justice. I wanted her to have a platform to speak her truth, so others could hear her and know why it mattered. When it came time to pick a Student Ambassador for the twelve month XQ+RI High School Transformation Redesign Project, I knew Maddy would be the perfect fit for that opportunity.

Once selected, Maddy shined in her role!  The more she spoke, the more everyone took notice.  Within a few months, she became nationally noticed, and she and I were asked to attend: A Calling: The Civil Right to Education, a high profile event with  activists, celebrities, leaders in business and students from all around the world speaking and sharing on the topic of equity and human rights. It was one of the most inspiring and amazing experiences I have ever had, and watching it through Maddy’s eyes was incredible.  Following the two-day ceremonies, Maddy wrote an article which is slated to be included in an upcoming book about the event. She also was asked to give the opening keynote speech on the topic of equity and Real-World Learning in public school to 300 educators from across the state, and she was fabulous.

Today, Maddy is a college student considering a career in activism, journalism, public policy and marketing.  She and I remain close, and we talk about all of her upcoming projects. I feel proud to have worked with her and watch her cultivate her talents and skills.  She is a remarkable young woman who has much to offer, and I look forward to watching her grow, change and become the outstanding individual I know she will become.
